John McEuen used to drop in at the old Dusty Road and the Station Inn to jam with the bluegrassers (pictured in the shadow behind him is Bob Fowler). This photo was taken in l973 when the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band was going strong.
John said he liked to jam with the pickers at the Dusty Road, and later at the Station Inn, to get a little variety in his music. Like members of all hit bands, John was constantly traveling the country “playing the same l7 songs.” He said the thrill for him was to get onstage with other players and play something completely fresh, unrehearsed and off the wall.
